MACKLEMORE.....MORE THAN A ROADSHOW!
Staples Center, Los Angeles California, December 4, 2013.
Went to see Macklemore tonight and I feel like I have to write about it. I have learned to journal when something affects me negatively or positively, so that I have it to reflect on and remember.
First, I know that I always say how beautiful he is, and how I want to marry him blah blah blah.......well all of that is true ....butttttttt.......
I'm feeling really excited. Robert is picking me up in like 10 minutes and I have been waiting for this concert for months. I haven't felt this excited about seeing a show in a long time. I have been so lucky to have had a life that put me in the middle of movie makers and rock and roll royalty. I've been backstage with superstars, and in the homes of the most famous of film makers and actors, so I don't know exactly why this show is making me literally shiver. It really isn't what I tease about, and act silly about, like that I love Macklemore and all of that. I like to do that because I know people get a kick out of it, and if I can make someone laugh for a few minutes it makes me feel happy.
Something else is gnawing on my brain. This man speaks so openly about his recovery and relapse and sobriety thereafter that it is a little scary for me. I surround myself with 12 steppers for safety. Sober people who are trying hard to hang on. I like survivors. I always have. The tornado's I have lived through because of active addictions have of course made me into who I am. So I very much like people who are making change. It is more intoxicating for me than any six pack or bicep. Watching people live their lives to the fullest is a pleasure that I get to see daily. I do it myself. I try the best I that I can. I try to keep my side of the street clean, and make amends when I need to. I try to make change. I know I have. I accept that now. I didn't for a long time. I would always blow it off when someone would tell me I was doing good things. I no longer am shy about it. I own it. I am also proud of it.
Macklemore affects me so much because he is making such social change in a way that I have never seen before. He is literally taking gay rights , racism, acceptance and tolerance, love, sobriety and recovery, addiction and relapse to a new level. He is reaching kids and adults. There were young kids screaming, every age dancing, laughing, and all crying when he was singing about the scared sadness in his dads eyes when he had to tell him he relapsed. I could literally feel the pain. I was so overwhelmed I was crying but loved hearing the outcome. He is just real. Real is good.
He talked , in a very easy and cool way, about how no government, teacher, state, politician friend or family should tell anyone who they can and can't love. He screamed like a preacher about equality for all. This wasn't a lecture. This was seriously like a revival movement. He was preaching to a flock that adores him. To go to a rap concert and be OK to be openly gay and sing and laugh about it is something I have never experienced. To see young kids screaming when he sang Same Love, and yell equality, and to see grandparents screaming with them was extremely emotional for me.
When the insanely fun songs were on, it gave us time to realize, that he came out of the dark and into the light. He fucked up and then fixed up. And he is sharing it. Sharing it is good. He loves his gay uncles and doesn't want them hurting because of inequality. And he is sharing that. Sharing it is good.
I am home now. I had to write this for my own head. I am going to share it. Sharing it is good.

WEST HOLLYWOOD SUPPORTS EQUALITY, NOT DISCRIMINATION, IN RUSSIA AND PORTERVILLE CALIFORNIA
A person would never expect to see such similar resolutions on a single city agenda. In West Hollywood, on August 5, 2013, the city council of West Hollywood , indeed, unanimously, on the consent calendar, condemned Russia's Vlad Putin's anti-gay laws, calling for jail and worse for anyone even as much as supporting LGBT rights. He called anything to do with the support of gays as pornography, and criminal. He has threatened that even gay tourists from other countries will be held for 14 days in prison, for even being suspected of being gay.
Pride Month in the City of Porterville. Upon this happening, the other councilmen, who more resemble wolves than men, declined to sign the
proclamation, and voted by three to two, on July 16, 2013, to rescind it. Upon outcry from the LGBT community when they did it, arrests were made and gay and lesbian activists were carted off to jail, rather than simply removed from the council chambers. Unlike when a rabidly homophobic public speaker (suspiciously latent) called for the death penalty for the LGBT community and made discriminatory remarks to the mayor, was simply removed from chambers. Double standard? HELL YES. They do not try to hide it. It is a garden of inequality, that grows nothing but thorns. It has been said that Mayor Gurrola has had to have security since the proclamation because of threats to her well being. This is a city gone awry. It is a city that provides no support to its LGBT citizens. It is a city that wants them to leave. It is a city where housewives get up during public comment and blame gay men for every STD and STI on earth. It is a city driven by a God. Not a loving God. A conveniently evil God. One that has been fabricated by men. One that calls for people to harm other people. One that leaves their religious leaders to suspect as they endorse and watch this God.
That type of hatred could never exist here in the US.....RIGHT?........WRONG! Enter Porterville California. The only city in the state that has the hateful distinction of formally endorsing Proposition 8, the law stripping the LGBT community of our right to marry, and leaving aprox 18000 LGBT people who already married in legal limbo for years. That of course as we know was deemed unenforceable, much to the chagrin of the opposition , who are still making feeble attempts to stop marriage equality. They are fools. They are backwards. They are not thinkers.

Tonight I watched as the West Hollywood city council cringed at the stories we told them in public comment. Cringed when they felt the hurt caused by Cameron Hamilton, Brian Ward, and Greg Shelton, the three thugs posing as city council members, and cringed when they realized, the LGBT community of Porterville feels outcast. Our council members unanimously adopted a resolution supporting Porterville' now rescinded LGBT Pride Month's proclamation. Our packed council chambers applauded long and hard.
This is a city of fairness, equality and thinkers. This city embraces diversity, and takes care of all of its constituents.
In years to come, the current council of Porterville will look like the KKK run amuck. They will be laughed at like cheap parlor jokes and their grandchildren will bare the shame of their legacy's. The world is watching Porterville. West Hollywood took notice tonight. I am sure there will be more city's to follow.

PORTERVILLE CALIFORNIA'S CLOWN CAR OF A CITY COUNCIL
Porterville California, also known as Band Town USA, is a city in the San Joaquin Valley, in Tulare County, California, United States. Porterville's population was 54,165 at the 2010 census.
By all accounts, this distant city would have never made my radar had it not been for a dear friend asking for help to bring attention to the absolute hate being puked onto the LGBT community, by it's own city leaders (with the exception of a lone hero Mayor Virginia Gurrola). This starts at the top and drips down onto many of the community members. It appears to me that the vitriol aimed at the LGBT community in the name of some toxic God, has seemingly called for religious armageddon. It ended in a sad sad day for the LGBT community on Tuesday July 16th, when the three council members , wolf pack style, took a proclamation away from the LGBT community that was given to them by the Mayor. They then proceeded to change the law deciding on how proclamations are now given. This town also has the distinction of being the only town to officially endorse prop 8. How's that workin' for you guys?
At the wheel of this clown car, are three men who have shown such disdain for the LGBT community that it makes me question their sexuality. It's been proven that such undying hatred of another persons sexuality, brings cause for question of your own. Their names are Cameron Hamilton, who has contacted me via social media even after I have asked him not to, until he has had a proper mental evaluation. Today I blocked him, as I was notified by facebook that he was now "following" me. Stalker? Bully? You tell me. This man mentioned me in his diatribe during the first go round of this rescinding of the proclamation and I have never met him.
Next is Brian Ward, a self proclaimed "outsider" because of his Mormon religion. If he feels consequences because of his religion, he has the ability to change it. LGBT folks do not choose who we are, we simply are born this way. You don't agree? Who cares? Live your life. Let us live ours. This man , in what I see as the most osbscene moment of the evening, went on to say that his sons obesity causes him to be bullied daily. As if that means its ok to be bullied. Using his sons weight issues, in the town square, as a reason to subscribe to his hatefilled political agenda is nothing less than mental abuse put upon a child. There seems to be some type of sensitivity gene missing here.
The last is Greg Shelton. In the midst of the very commotion that he caused, he had the audacity to try to spin this and make Mayor Virginia Gurrola the perp, as he made the council the victims. I guess the old "Let's blame the victim" type of policy is what he has chosen to use. It never works. Not when used in rape, murder or any other horrific deed.

By all accounts, this distant city would have never made my radar had it not been for a dear friend asking for help to bring attention to the absolute hate being puked onto the LGBT community, by it's own city leaders (with the exception of a lone hero Mayor Virginia Gurrola). This starts at the top and drips down onto many of the community members. It appears to me that the vitriol aimed at the LGBT community in the name of some toxic God, has seemingly called for religious armageddon. It ended in a sad sad day for the LGBT community on Tuesday July 16th, when the three council members , wolf pack style, took a proclamation away from the LGBT community that was given to them by the Mayor. They then proceeded to change the law deciding on how proclamations are now given. This town also has the distinction of being the only town to officially endorse prop 8. How's that workin' for you guys?
At the wheel of this clown car, are three men who have shown such disdain for the LGBT community that it makes me question their sexuality. It's been proven that such undying hatred of another persons sexuality, brings cause for question of your own. Their names are Cameron Hamilton, who has contacted me via social media even after I have asked him not to, until he has had a proper mental evaluation. Today I blocked him, as I was notified by facebook that he was now "following" me. Stalker? Bully? You tell me. This man mentioned me in his diatribe during the first go round of this rescinding of the proclamation and I have never met him.
Next is Brian Ward, a self proclaimed "outsider" because of his Mormon religion. If he feels consequences because of his religion, he has the ability to change it. LGBT folks do not choose who we are, we simply are born this way. You don't agree? Who cares? Live your life. Let us live ours. This man , in what I see as the most osbscene moment of the evening, went on to say that his sons obesity causes him to be bullied daily. As if that means its ok to be bullied. Using his sons weight issues, in the town square, as a reason to subscribe to his hatefilled political agenda is nothing less than mental abuse put upon a child. There seems to be some type of sensitivity gene missing here.
The last is Greg Shelton. In the midst of the very commotion that he caused, he had the audacity to try to spin this and make Mayor Virginia Gurrola the perp, as he made the council the victims. I guess the old "Let's blame the victim" type of policy is what he has chosen to use. It never works. Not when used in rape, murder or any other horrific deed.

I AM VOTING TO RE-ELECT JOHN DURAN FOR CITY COUNCIL. SO MANY NAYSAYERS TELL ME IT IS TO REMAIN AS HIS APPOINTED COMMISSIONER. SO MANY PEOPLE ASK ME IF IT IS TO BELONG TO THE "INSIDERS" CLUB. NEITHER IS TRUE. I WAS A SUPPORTER AND BELIEVER IN JOHN DURAN LONG BEFORE (12 YEARS) I BECAME HIS HUMAN SERVICES COMMISSIONER. AS FAR AS BEING IN THE "INSIDERS" CLUB, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. I KNOW JOHN FOR MORE THAN A DECADE AND HAVE NEVER HAD A CUP OF COFFEE WITH HIM. NEVER BEEN TO HIS APARTMENT (REMEMBER, HE IS THE ONLY COUNCIL MEMBER WHO ACTUALLY RENTS IN WEHO , SO HIS CONCERN FOR RENTERS RIGHTS IS A GIVEN), I DO NOT SOCIALIZE WITH HIM, AND KNOW NOTHING OF HIS PERSONAL LIFE.
NONE OF THAT MATTERS TO ME WHEN I BELIEVE IN SOMEONE. QUITE FRANKLY, BASED ON HIS OWN PROVEN COMPASSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRUE LOVE OF WEST HOLLYWOOD, JOHN IS SIMPLY, FOR ME, THE BEST CANDIDATE.
HE IS ONE OF TWO OUTSPOKEN CURRENT COUNCIL MEMBERS, WHO HELPED SAVE THE WEST HOLLYWOOD RECOVERY CENTER FROM THE WRECKING BALL. NO MATTER WHAT SPIN WAS PUT ON THAT TOPIC, THAT BUILDING WAS GOING TO BE RUBBLE. A CALL AND EXPLANATION TO JOHN FROM ME AND A HUGELY FORMING COALITION OF PEOPLE IN RECOVERY, STATING ONLY FACTS, WAS ALL IT TOOK FOR HIM TO COME TO THE RESCUE. HE HELPED TO SAVE MORE THAN 6000 PEOPLE MONTHLY FROM BEING DISPLACED FROM THAT CENTER'S NEEDED SERVICES.
HE IS THE ONLY COUNCIL MEMBER, WHO NOT ONLY UNDERSTANDS OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO SUFFER WITH ADDICTION AND RECOVERY, BUT SHOWS THEM LOVE AND KINDNESS WITHOUT BEING REPULSED AND QUESTIONING OF THEIR LIVES. HE IS SIMPLY THERE TO HELP AND ASSOCIATE AND INTERACT WITH THEM AS EQUALS.
A FEW MEETINGS WITH JOHN, 7 OR EIGHT YEARS AGO, ABOUT GETTING THE WORD OUT ABOUT METH RECOVERY RESULTED IN THE ABILITY FOR THE TWEAKERS PROJECT TO BE BORN. TO DATE WE HAVE PLACED MORE THAN 40 PEOPLE INTO TREATMENT FACILITIES OR SOBER LIVING ENVIRONMENTS. I HAVE NO DOUBT IN MY ABILITY TO HAVE GOTTEN THAT DONE ON MY OWN, BUT A FEW MEETINGS WITH JOHN MADE IT HAPPEN A LOT FASTER, AS HE SAW AN IMMEDIATE NEED AND CALL TO ACTION.
HIS HISTORY OF BEING AN OUT GAY AND OPENLY HIV POSITIVE ELECTED OFFICIAL, IS NOT ONLY BRAVE, BUT I BELIEVE HE SEES AS NECESSARY. HE IS A SHINING EXAMPLE IF SURVIVING HIV, STILL FEELING YOUNG AT HEART (AND HE AIN'T NO KID) AND AGGRESSIVELY SUPPORTIVE OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY, WHETHER THEY BE YOUNG, OLD, GAY, LESBIAN, TRANS OR QUESTIONING.
JOHN IS A GREAT SUPPORTER OF THE ARTS, WHICH AS WE KNOW, ARE SOMETIMES THE ONLY OUTLETS FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE LGBT TO SHINE IN SCHOOL. MANY OF US WHO SUCKED AT SPORTS OR THE "USUAL" GENDER APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES, TURNED TO THE ARTS TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS OURSELVES. IT SAVED A LOT OF US FROM LEAVING SCHOOL. AND TO FORM OUR PERSONALITIES AND ABILITIES TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN MANY OTHER AREAS OF OUR LIVES.
COULD I GO ON AND ON? SURE. I JUST DON'T SEE THE NEED., HUMAN COMPASSION AND BRUTAL PERSONAL HONESTY WORK FOR ME. I SEE THAT IN JOHN AND ALWAYS HAVE. MY SUPPORT GOES WAY BEYOND A CITY APPOINTMENT. IT IS TRUE AND HONEST AND REAL.
I DO WANT TO WISH ALL CANDIDATES THE BEST OF LUCK. IT TAKES GUTS AND A REAL LOVE OF THE CITY TO PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON YOURSELVES. MAY THE BEST MAN WIN.
